Navigating the Messy Middle: How I Survive and Thrive Through the Seasons of Business
Running a business isn’t always the polished highlight reel you see online. There are seasons–just like in life. I’ve experienced the full cycle: the excitement and uncertainty of the startup phase, the chaos and growth pains of the messy middle, and the sweet (but fleeting) moments of flow and freedom in the abundance phase. Right now? I’m deep in the messy middle. It’s the season where everything feels like too much-deadlines are slipping, your inbox is overflowing, and you’re wondering if you’re cut out for this. But here’s what I’ve learned: the messy middle doesn’t mean you’re failing-it means you’re building.
During this stage, I’ve had to lean into messy action, let go of perfection, and communicate openly with my team, clients, and family. I’ve cried, I’ve doubted myself, and I’ve taken breaks when my body demanded it. I even had a recent health scare that reminded me just how important it is to prioritise wellness, no matter how busy business gets. The key for me has been taking the next right step–no matter how small-and not making permanent decisions in a temporary season. It’s about progress, not perfection. And it’s about remembering that growth often feels like stress before it feels like success.
If you’re in your own messy middle, please know you’re not alone. You’re not broken–you’re growing. Don’t quit in the winter–spring is coming. Keep going, lean into support, and remember this is just one chapter of your business journey. You’re building something powerful, even if it feels messy right now. And I’m cheering you on every step of the way.
Startup Season: Scarcity, Hope, and Drive
Ah, the early days! Everything felt urgent. I was doing it all—marketing, admin, client service, bookkeeping—while riding the high of building something from scratch. I had big dreams but very little time, money, or support. Sound familiar?
What helped me:
-
Ruthless prioritisation. I stopped trying to do all the things and focused on what actually moved the needle.
-
Embracing imperfection. I launched with clunky systems and learned as I went.
-
Finding a mentor. Having someone who’d walked the path before me was a total game-changer.
The Messy Middle: Chaos and Growing Pains
This is the season where many of us want to tap out. Business is growing, which is great—but so is the chaos. Suddenly you’re dropping balls, missing deadlines, feeling completely overwhelmed, and wondering why you thought this was a good idea in the first place.
Let me tell you—this is where I’ve been lately. And it’s where so many of my clients are too. You’re not failing, you’re growing. But growth? It can be messy as hell.
What’s working for me right now:
-
Open communication. I’ve been honest with my team, clients, and even my family about what’s going on. People appreciate the realness.
-
Messy action. I remind myself daily: progress, not perfection.
-
Rest. I recently had to take time off for surgery and it forced me to slow down. Guess what? The world didn’t end. Rest is productive too.
Abundance Season: Flow, Freedom, and Alignment
This is the season we’re all working towards. When your systems are humming, your team is thriving, and you finally feel aligned with your values and vision. Business starts to feel like freedom, not survival.
When I touch this season (even if briefly), I:
-
Celebrate every win—big or small.
-
Reinforce my team and systems for long-term success.
-
Give back and mentor others who are in their own messy middle.
How I’m Surviving the Messy Middle
If you’re in the weeds right now, I see you. Here are a few truths and strategies that have helped me stay afloat:
🩷 Acknowledge Your Reality (And Your Humanity)
Yes, I’ve cried into my pillow. I’ve wanted to quit. But I’ve also realised that emotional release is healthy—and it’s part of the process. You’re not a robot. You’re a human running a business.
🩷 Communicate, Communicate, Communicate
Being transparent with the people around me has saved my sanity (and probably a few client relationships). Vulnerability builds trust—it doesn’t break it.
🩷 Don’t Make Permanent Decisions in a Temporary Season
This one’s gold. When you’re in a storm, it’s not the time to burn everything down. I tell myself, “Kylie, quit in the next season. Not this one.” Give yourself space before making big decisions.
🩷 Just Take the Next Right Step
Some days, all I can manage is one thing on my list. And that’s okay. Small actions, done consistently, are what build businesses.
🩷 Prioritise Your Health
I’m guilty of ignoring my own health until it screams at me. After a recent skin check (that turned into surgery), I’ve learned to listen earlier. Self-care isn’t optional—it’s foundational.
🩷 Lean Into Support
From my team to my podcast guests to women in my community—having support is everything. Don’t go it alone. There are people who get it and want to help.
🩷 Growth Feels Like Stress Before It Feels Like Success
Every mentor I admire has shared this same truth: the pain is part of the progress. You’re not broken—you’re building. Keep going.
You’re Not Failing—You’re Growing
If you’re reading this with a knot in your stomach and a to-do list longer than your arm, please hear me: this is just a season. You’re not alone. You’re doing better than you think. And this messy, challenging phase? It’s shaping you into the leader and business owner you’re meant to become.
Keep showing up. Keep taking messy action. Keep believing in the version of you that’s waiting on the other side of this chaos.
I’m in the trenches with you. And I believe in you—fiercely.
